Wellbeing Village
Middleton, Manchester
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
To promote regeneration in Middleton ‘Railway Corridor’ through the provision of an innovative residential development that also helps to address:
- the decline in personal wellbeing seen across the UK;
- homelessness;
- the 20% of homes in England which are classed as a ’non-decent’ home;
- the 9 million people in the UK who are either always or often lonely, including half a million older people who go at least 5 or 6 days a week without seeing or speaking to another human being.
Middleton is in the upper decile for risk of loneliness as well as on the index of multiple deprivation (which includes health and disability) and fuel poverty.
The proposed development will deliver 79 homes of various types and sizes all of which are designed and placed to improve health and wellbeing outcomes and attract a diverse demographic. The 79 homes have been determined by research into local demand which highlights a growing shortage of private rented sector housing in most parts of the town. Research also shows a high requirement for suitable accommodation for older people; people of working age with long term health issues and disabilities; and those with disabilities. The proposed homes are of high quality and are both accessible and flexible in their design and suitable for a broad variety of users.
The dwelling types vary from dual aspect flexible 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments to single aspect 1 bed apartments and 4 bed town houses.
